Where did you study and when?
I parlayed a teaching degree at ACU into an arts degree at Macquarie, majoring in history and politics. Since joining the industry, I have completed a Diploma in Financial Services (Insurance Broking) and attained QPIB status from NIBA and Senior Associate status from ANZIIF.
What was your first job?
My most memorable job as an impoverished uni student was as a truckie’s offsider delivering white goods. Lugging fridges over summer brought home to me the value of education and to not judge people based on their job. I am pleased to say I am still mates with “Gazza the truckie” today.
I was lucky enough to receive broad training in various insurance classes working with several insurers. None of them exist anymore; hopefully not due to my influence! From there, I was approached by a broker and have primarily worked in the commercial, corporate and professional risk broking space since. That was 25 years ago.
Time in the industry?
I finished university in 1989 and started in the industry in 1990.
Why/how did you get your start in the industry?
My education was more interest than vocationally based and I always saw myself in a business environment. Insurance offered a great opportunity to learn about a wide variety of businesses and deal with people from all walks of life. I really enjoy the variety insurance offers.
Having started with a traditional commercial base, I identified that few brokers had strong expertise in professional risks and other specialist products and saw this as a real opportunity to differentiate myself. During the tech boom of the late 1990s, I specialised in technology businesses when bespoke products for the industry first became available. I have maintained my passion for being at the forefront of new and innovative specialised products for emerging risks and now really enjoy talking to clients about cyber risks. I also have significant experience in managing risks faced by firms going through the process of ASX listings and the specific needs of businesses requiring AFSLs.
What motivates you?
I love responding to a challenge and, as insurance is highly solutions based, I really enjoy delivering great outcomes to our clients.
Personal interests and hobbies?
Outside work, I enjoy relaxing with the family and spending time with Charlie, our gorgeous black labrador. And then there is rugby. Always rugby.
